Mental Health Counseling
Modalities I Draw From
-
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT seeks to help individuals increase psychological flexibility through pairing a stance of mindfulness and acceptance towards internal experiences with commitment towards actions guided by value and meaning. Instead of trying to remove painful thoughts or emotions, ACT works to support individuals in building a different relationship with these experiences, and ultimately strives to support individuals in knowing and reaching for what matters to them even in the presence of pain.
-
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
DBT seeks to help individuals understand patterns of behavior that they are trying to change, and build skills that allow them to tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and communicate effectively. Central to DBT is the search for the balance between and the multiple truths within seemingly disparate ideas and experiences, as well as the pursuit of a “life worth living.” While I use several elements of DBT in my work, as researched and practiced adherently DBT is a multi-pronged approach that includes elements like group skills training and phone coaching that I do not currently offer in my practice.
-
Other Mindfulness-Based and Behavioral Therapies
In addition to ACT and DBT I use several elements of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP), an in-the-moment behavioral approach that focused on interactions in the therapeutic relationship, in my work. I also integrate Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) which strives to build out compassionate responding to ourselves and others. I’ve been trained in short-term exposure-based interventions including Exposure and Response Prevention for OCD and Prolonged Exposure for PTSD.

Other Things to Know About My Approach
I view therapy as an ongoing practice of building, strengthening, and fine-tuning skills that allow us notice, navigate, and respond effectively internal experiences. Much like we might strengthen or stretch the muscles in our body to recover from injury or to prepare us for events or hobbies that are important to us, counseling allows us space and practice to mentally grow (or regrow) the flexibility, vulnerability, bravery, and tolerance to catch what life throws at us. In general I find I am my most effective when working with clients who resonate with this conceptualization of the therapeutic process or have goals that align with a process-based or skill-building approach.
The practice of therapy has deep roots in colonialism and a very real history of institutional violence against marginalized communities. While the harms caused by our field can’t be undone, I believe it is the responsibility of every provider to learn about and acknowledge these harms and work to rectify and repair their impact. In conjunction with this work, I am committed to engaging in anti-oppressive practices and actively work to uphold anti-racist, trauma-informed, sex-positive, and body-positive lens in my practice. The principles of Harm Reduction are important to me and I seek to embed these in my work as well.
